Letter to the Editor in the Cols. Dispatch

Wow! Finally, someone who can explain my version of "Pro-Life" - which I have never been able to put into words myself.....or never so eloquently. Thank you Mr. Lorz

Pro-life means more than anti-abortion
Tuesday, October 28, 2008 2:57 AM
Some people think it's impossible to be a Christian and vote for Illinois Sen. Barack Obama. Quite the contrary. I'm a lifelong Catholic, a 1961 graduate of St. Charles Preparatory School and pro-life. Here's why I voted for Obama. I don't define the term pro-life so narrowly that it automatically becomes a wedge issue.
To me, pro-life means avoiding war unless it is unavoidable, providing a dignified life for disabled veterans and sufficient benefits for soldiers coming home from war. Pro-life means providing comprehensive health care for children born into poverty, and all citizens, so we all may avoid disease and lead healthy lives. It means protecting Social Security and Medicare for senior citizens so they don't have to choose between heat or food or medicine.
Pro-life is providing a strong economy and good jobs so families can live above poverty with self-respect. It means investing in America's children and America's future by ensuring that all children receive a quality education so they can live their own American Dream.
And, pro-life means saving the health of our planet. Above all, pro-life means providing prenatal care and maternity leave, and drastically reducing the number of abortions in America through education and adoption counseling.
And it means balancing these basic needs against others' wants, so our national economy returns to health.
These are Obama's Christian values. They represent a culture of life, not just birth.

Powell redeems himself in my eyes

http://www.blog.newsweek.com/blogs/stumper/archive/2008/10/20/Why-the-Powell-Endorsement-Might-Actually-Matter.aspx

After the hoax perpetuated by the Bush Administration - assuring us that there were wmd's in Iraq - which Powell confirmed I crossed him off my list. While he certainly was made into their scapegoat, he could have swum against the tide. He has now gone a very long way toward redeeming himself in my eyes.

You Gotta Love This!

"The second presidential debate is tonight, and beforehand John McCain said that the `gloves are coming off.' Then McCain said, `But don't worry, the diaper is staying on,'" quipped Conan O'Brien on NBC's "Late Night."

With the debate format, "the candidates can walk around freely," noted Craig Ferguson on CBS' "The Late Late Show." "McCain prepared by putting new tennis balls on his walker."

"Is there anything this woman can't make sound folksy?" Stewart said of Palin. "`And let's not forget about that doggone genocide in Rwanda!'"

"In a recent speech, Sarah Palin referred to Afghanistan as `our neighboring country.' Then she promised to find Osama bin Laden in the mountains of Toronto," O'Brien said.

And Palin starred atop CBS "Late Show" host David Letterman's list of Top 10 Signs You Are Watching a Bad Debate: "It's 90 minutes of folksy phrases and winking."

I'm gonna make me some of this!

TORTILLA SOUP WITH CHICKEN, LIME AND SMOKED CHILIES
Makes 6 servings
This is a lighter version of some tortilla soups that can be thick and tomatoey.
1 small dried chipotle pepper (see Note)
1 1/2 tablespoons oil plus extra for tortilla strips
1 cup chopped onion
1 tablespoon minced garlic
2 teaspoons ground cumin
1 1/2 teaspoons dried oregano
1 can (28 ounces) diced tomatoes, well-drained
6 cups chicken stock
1 pound boneless skinless chicken breasts, cut into 1-inch pieces
1 medium yellow bell pepper, stemmed, seeded and cut into thin strips
2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
Kosher salt
6 corn tortillas (6 to 7 inches in diameter)
1/2 to 3/4 cup sour cream
1/2 cup chopped fresh cilantro
6 thin lime wedges for garnish (optional)
Put chipotle in small bowl. Cover with 1 cup boiling water. Let stand until softened, about 20 minutes. Drain, discarding water. Pat dry. Using a small sharp knife, cut lengthwise and scrape out seeds. Coarsely chop pepper.
Heat 1 1/2 tablespoons oil in a large heavy pot over medium heat. Add onion. Cook until softened, stirring often, 4 to 5 minutes. Add garlic. Stir 1 minute more. Add chipotle, cumin, oregano, tomatoes and stock. Bring to a simmer. Cook 10 minutes. Puree the soup in a food processor. Return to pot.
Bring soup to a simmer over medium heat. Add chicken and bell pepper. Simmer until chicken is cooked through and pepper is tender, about 5 minutes. Stir in lime juice. Season with salt.
Stack tortillas. Cut in half. Cut halves into 1/4-inch-wide strips.
Set a medium skillet over medium-high heat. Coat the bottom of the skillet generously with olive oil. Add a third of the tortilla strips and cook, turning often, until golden and crisp, about 3 to 4 minutes. Using a slotted spoon, transfer strips to paper towels to drain. Repeat with remaining strips, adding more oil to skillet as necessary.
Ladle soup into bowl. Garnish with tortilla strips, a dollop of sour cream and a sprinkle of cilantro. Serve with a lime wedge if desired.
Note: Dried chipotles can be found at Latin American markets and some supermarkets. If you can't find them, use a canned chipotle packed in adobo. Rinse well; seed and chop it before adding to soup.

Sticky Buns!

I am so going to make these! Watched the throwdown show with Bobby Flay and my mouth watered thru the entire episode.

Too old to serve.

Older than dirt! Shouldn't there be some sort of written exam to determine whether senility is a concern? Remember, this is the position that can push that big red button!

Yummy! Maybe we'll make these

COCA-COLA-GLAZED BABY-BACK RIBS
Makes about 4 servings
This recipe was reprinted with permission from Bon Appetit, Y'all: Recipes and Stories From Three Generations of Southern Cooking by Virginia Willis.
1 cup Coca-Cola Classic
1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
1 1/2 cups firmly packed light brown sugar
2 Scotch bonnet chilies (see Note)
2 racks baby-back ribs (3 pounds total)
Coarse salt and freshly ground black pepper
To make the glaze, in a small saucepan, bring the Coca-Cola, vinegar, brown sugar and chilies to a boil over high heat. Reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer until syrupy, about 10 minutes. Decrease the heat to low and keep the sauce warm while the ribs cook.
Preheat the oven to 325 degrees.
Liberally season both sides of the ribs with salt and pepper. Place the ribs on a broiler pan and bake for 30 minutes, glazing the ribs occasionally with the Coca-Cola mixture. Turn the ribs over and continue to cook for an additional 30 minutes or longer, glazing occasionally, until the ribs are tender and the meat is starting to pull away from the bone (see Note).
When the ribs are cooked through, set the oven to broil. Liberally spoon half of the remaining glaze over the ribs and broil until glazed a deep mahogany brown, 5 to 7 minutes. Turn over; repeat with the remaining glaze, an additional 5 to 7 minutes.
Serve immediately with lots of napkins.
Note: For a hot sauce, chop the chili peppers with their seeds. For a milder sauce, remove and discard the seeds before chopping the chilies. For the mildest sauce yet, use jalapenos, either with or without seeds. When baking the ribs in my oven, the baby-backs needed an extra 25 to 30 minutes until tender.

Unbelievable!

I saw this headline today - "McCain raps Obama for lack of military service"

How can a member of the republican party keep a straight face and say something like this. Georgie and his sidekick Cheney actively avoided any type of real military duty. Give me a break.

Just goes to show that McCain and his camp are having difficulties in finding anything of substance to call Obama out on.

Gary being goofy

Gary doesn't like to have his photo taken, and frequently chooses this particular pose. Someday I'll round up all of the photo's I have of him and do a collage of "faces".

Adam and Laura

They are beautiful people.

A new meaning for "tongue lashing"

Bambam cleans Georgie's ears on a daily basis:) They take good care of each other.

Sometimes you're the target!

A newspaper photographer got a little too close to the action at the state high school track championships - and was speared through the leg by a javelin. Ryan McGeeney of the Standard-Examiner was spared serious injury in Saturday's mishap, and even managed to snap a photo of his speared leg while others worked to help him. "

Pet Peeves

Not a good day today. For the past two days I have driven myself into the ground to have the house ready for the realtors preview - and I am not exaggerating. My house sparkles!

Took a half-day at work so that I could run the sweeper one last time, put out water bottles and granola bars for the realtors, and get the dogs out during the open house. We were really hoping for some good feedback and interest from a collection of realtors. I took Matt to school and then drove around with the dogs for an hour and a half. Finally went home, but could find no sign that anyone had been there. Come to find out that our realtor emailed my work email address at 10:45 to let me know that it had been cancelled and he would try to reschedule for tomorrow. Not a phone call.....an email. Jeez. At that point I had wasted a half day of vacation, exhausted myself.....I very rarely even check my work email from home. What was he thinking?

Very frustrating morning.

Liberalism vs. Conservatism

How freaking true is this?

"Liberalism is trust of the people tempered by prudence. Conservatism is distrust of the people tempered by fear." William E. Gladstone

Dissent

"In a democracy, dissent is an act of faith." J. William Fulbright

Pablo

We have a bird - a sun conure named Pablo. This is what he looks like!

Our Sons

I am very proud of our sons, they are all unique, creative, intelligent, handsome young men who I hope will someday present me with daughters that are the same!

25th Anniversary

Gary and I will celebrate our 25th Wedding Anniversary in December. While I am very proud of that, believe me when I say it is because of him and his character far, far more than because of or in spite of me and mine!

First Post

This past year has been a time of big change for me and my family. Gary accepted a new job in Pennsylvania and we have spent the past several months getting the house painted and polished, readying it for the market. What a terrible time to have to try to sell a home! The sign went up last week, and we have a realtor showing on Wednesday. Realtors from all over our area will meet, go through the house, and offer feedback to assist us in our quest.

Here is a link to the house: http://impact.ohio.remax.com/listings/ListingDetail_r4.aspx?LID=47802964&#aTop

I am excited to finally be at this point, all of the big painting projects completed and everything cleaned and spiffed up. I am sad to finally be at this point because this is the family home, where we brought up all of our sons. There are so many happy memories that surely whomever lives there next will know that this is a happy house.
